Depression Ayurvedic treatment

Depression is a psychiatric disorder that may be responsible for low mood and physical illness with so many symptoms. This is also known as major depression, clinical depression and depressive disorder. In ayurveda, it is referred to as Chittavsada in Ayurveda. If a person watches a decreasing interest in the things he loved to do and this continues a while, may be suffering from a depressive disorder. Depressed mood is not always a psychiatric disorder. It can also be a normal reaction to life events. Such a condition occurs when someone fails in test, separates, left by a lover, lost a job etc. It is very difficult for a depressed person to focus on other important works. Depression often becomes worse than other physical afflictions in a way that affects the functioning of the mind and, in turn, affects everything else.

Ayurveda gives reasons for the three doshas (dosa) depression - Pitta dosha (controls digestion, metabolism and energy production), Vata dosha (governs the movement of the body, the activities of the nerves) and Kapha dosha (controlling the structure of the body and joins the cell forming muscle, bone, fat and tendons). The main functions of Vata, Pitta and Kapha are respectively, transformation, elimination and protection. Increase in any of these doshs leads to the possibilities of depression. Routine irregular, lack of sleep, wake up at night and dried, frozen or micro-corrugated food consumption can be the reason for the imbalance in Vata dosha. Anxiety, guilty, fear, phobia, insomnia and bad night can be symptoms of depression caused by Vata dosha. Mental disturbance, verbal abuse and excessive consumption of alcohol or other addiction, excessive study and overwork are the cause of the imbalance of Pitta dosha. Violence can be seen in the person influenced by Pitta dosha. Kapha dosha disturbance in the brain can be caused by sleep in day time, on the consumption of heavy & oily food or lack of physical exercises.

The increase in the incidence of loss of appetite is reported by a patient suffering from a depressive disorder. The timely intervention in cases of severe depression is needed that fall outside of these disorders can be observed in people near the patient. Herbs like Amla (Phyllanthus emblica), aswagandha (Wthania Somnifera), shankhpushpi and sandalwood are very useful in Vata dosh. Some other herbs that are useful in the depression caused by pitta or kapha dosha are triphala (Commiphora wightii), jatamanasi (Aralia), guduchi (tinospora cordifolia), brahmi etc.. Cardamom and turmeric (curcuma longa) have also proven to be useful in the treatment of depression or seasonal disorder. As Shirodhara therapy is very useful to eliminate the toxic element and relieve stress.

For the treatment of depression in health centers, provide a counselling patients to evaluate the true cause of the depression. After this complete assessment doctor could only make the necessary steps to remedy the problem.

Improvement in the daily routine is obligatory for a person who suffers from depression. It will be good if influenced person performing yoga every day and often visit a religious site.
